CYC recently received from Barry McCahill, a great suggestion to take a look at a recent article in Woody Boater. We would like to suggest that perhaps you do the same! Here is the the message sent to Commodore Dave. Check out the article and photos! Nice!
Item for the club newsletter...
As you may be aware, "Woody Boater" recently ran an article about the Cobbossee wooden boat fleet (http://www.woodyboater.com/classic-boat-art/cobbosseecontee-lake-getaway%E2%80%A8/). I missed my former wooden Chris Craft that lived for many years at the old Cobbossee Marina so much that I recently bought another classic for use here in Idaho. 1958 Mercury Sabre--relatively rare, made by a small California company back in the era of the wooden runabouts. Interior color is original. She will undergo some minor finish enhancements this winter and then will fly the CYC burgee beginning next summer on Payette Lake, McCall, ID. Wish she could join the Cobbossee wooden boat contingent but because of distance she will have to do so vicariously!
Best wishes for the fall season on the lake! Barry"
Looking good, Randy!
Like to see the photos, Jeff!
Herman Boas Scholarship 2013
As you may know, Herman Boas was a long time devoted and active member of the Cobbossee Yacht Club who lived at the north end of the lake for more than 80 years and had a vast interest in and knowledge of the history of Lake Cobbossee. He loved our lake! Many years ago, the CYC started a scholarship to fund a week at the State YMCA Camp in Winthrop and named it in his honor with the intent to help a young camper also develop an interest in and love for our lake. It is with great pleasure that we now announce that the recipient of the Herman Boas Scholarship Award for 2013 is again, Savanna Green, who will be an eighth grade student this fall at Gardiner Area Middle School. Savannah was photographed on August 3 on the morning of her final day at camp. In response to a question from the commodore regarding her week at Y Camp, her quick response was an enthusiastic, "Best week of my life!"
Here is Savannah (flag t-shirt) seated at the breakfast table listening to the emotional "goodbyes.")
As of Father's Day our lighthouse is still having issues. Twice corrected, the light again has ceased to operate and as of this announcement there is no power at all going to the island. Powers that be, however, are currently assessing the situation and hope that a successful conclusion can soon be reached. Sorry to those who so look forward to seeing the light but apparently the power is currently out of our hands! So to speak!
The light is now operational!
Kennebec Valley Business After Hours
CYC members are again invited to the annual Business After Hours event sponsored by the Kennebec Valley Chamber of Commerce and the Friends of the Cobbossee Watershed at the Lakeside Motel, Cabins and Marina from 5 to 7 pm, Wednesday, May 15, 2013. Rain date is scheduled for the following Wednesday. This is an exciting event that includes a BBQ cookout as well as boat rides on the lake courtesy of Clark Marine of Manchester.
Again...CYC members are invited to this event!
Another nice party although folks...IT WAS COLD! Many brave souls turned out for some excellent burgers, dogs and such, and compliments must again go to the hosts, Andy and Sheree, and all of those at the Kennebec Chamber of Commerce and the Friends of the Cobbossee Watershed who make this event an annual success!

Special Olympics Bass Tournament
This year's tournament was held Sunday, May 5 (always the first Sunday in May) and was again a great success! Close to 90 boats participated in this event which raises funds in support of Special Olympics Maine. The CYC is one of many sponsors of this very special and rewarding event. Good weather, good food, good spirits, and good fishing combined to make this another tournament to remember. Photos will eventually appear on this CYC site so stay tuned!
Congratulations to Andy and Sheree on another success!
Spring Water Level
The CYC received word on April 19, 2013 from Wendy Dennis at the Cobbossee Watershed District regarding the spring lake level. For those concerned that the water level at this time is low, the dam operator has been closing gates, the gates are not all open, there is no repair being done, and the intent is to let the level rise at least a foot this month and perhaps more later. However, keep in mind that mother nature must cooperate with that effort as well. Rain is much needed!
Update: As of May 7 the lake is still low but there is rain in the forecast for later in the week. Stay tuned!
Ice out 2013
This year's ice-out for Lake Cobbosseecontee has been established as Saturday, April 6, 2013. The time of day would be very late, and although scattered flows of thin ice could still be seen Sunday morning, the powers that be, based on the ability to easily navigate the lake north to south, have thus concluded that Saturday was the official day. Check out all of the ice-out dates from 1861 to the present on the Lake History page.
More Buddy Richards ice-out photos can be found on the Lake History, Ice-outs page.
